How neccessary is your vehicle usage?

It is obvious that one of the most effective ways to reduce your emmissions and fleet costs is to reduce your vehicle usage, our experience is that vehicle use is rarely monitored effectiveley and that opportunities for reducing usage are often missed.

One of the most effective ways to make large reductions in fuel costs and wear and tear is to reduce the number of trips that your vehicles make. The majority of the trips that your vehicles make are entirely necessary and can't be avoided, but if you could reduce usage by 10% you could potentially save yourself an entire vehicle for every 10 vehicles in your fleet.

Short journeys are particularly inefficient as a cold engine uses twice as much fuel as a warm engine with modern catalytic converters taking as much as 6 miles to become effective. You will achieve huge efficiencies by combining journeys and eliminating short journeys as much as you possible can.

There is always huge benefit in auditing your vehicle usage, you will be amazed at the opportunities you will identify for savings.

Once you are monitoring vehicle usage effectively you can get really proactive, targeting high mileage users and groups with alternatives to travel like holding more meetings in your premises, conducting more business on the telephone, teleconferencing, e-commerce and more geographically targeted marketing.

Once you have effective measures in place you can incentivise your staff to be more vehicle efficient by scheduling more meetings more closely together or combing trips and offering recognition and rewards for the best performers.

If you can get your staff motivated and taking responsibility for their vehicle usage you will start to see huge improvements with little input required from you.
