1. How will LPG save me money?
LPG (Autogas) is currently around half the price of petrol. This is because the Government have fixed the Road Fund License (RFL) far lower for LPG in recognition of its environmental benefits. To find out how much you could save, use our instant calculator
2. Can I convert my diesel to LPG?
Currently the combination of diesel and LPG may cause great increases in power output and mechanical problems. We therefore do not convert diesel run vehicles. However should a system be proven to run efficiently and be mechanically reliable with the same environmental benefits, then LPG Conversions Limited will carry out the relevant checks before agreeing to carry out installations
3. How much does it cost?
Each vehicle is different. To find out the cost of your conversion please use our contact us facility
4. Will it damage my engine?
An LPG conversion will reduce engine wear. LPG burns cleaner than petrol, this means there are fewer emissions out of the exhaust and less carbon deposits in the engine, which are very abrasive and can contribute to engine breakdown. You will find that your engine breakdown. Modern systems suffer no loss of performance and engines run smoother and quieter tanks fitted to LPGA safety guidelines
5. Is an LPG conversion safe?
This is one of the most common questions. Crash and fire tests have proven that the strength and integrity of tanks fitted to LPGA safety guidelines (CoP11) makes an LPG system safer than petrol. Even our Queen has 4 vehicles converted to LPG and there are over 8 million LPG vehicles around the world
6. What system will you fit?
There are a variety of systems on the market and they range considerably in price. We only fit the most reliable system that is suited to your type of vehicle. A system that is not compatible can be a receipt for disaster. If the correct system is fitted then you should be on the right road for trouble free motoring. Use the contact us facility to find out the right system for your vehicle
7. Where will the LPG tank be fitted?
Generally most tanks are fitted in the 8 million LPG vehicles, however during inspection of your vehicle, you can discuss the possibilities of other locations with your engineer
8. How long will the conversion take?
Generally 3 – 5 working days depending on the conversion. We can on most occasions offer you a courtesy car for the duration of your conversion. Please ask for details
9. Can I still drive on petrol?
Yes you can, LPG adds a second fuel system leaving the original petrol system in place. The vehicle normally cold starts on petrol and then automatically converts to run on LPG when the engine is warm. Whilst very few would want to forego the lower fuel running costs of LPG, it does provide an instant back up if you inadvertently run out of LPG
10. What happens if I run out of gas?
Your vehicle will be fitted with an LPG gauge, but should your vehicle run out of gas, it will automatically switch to petrol allowing you time to locate your nearest LPG supplier. It is therefore important to have some petrol in your vehicle at all times
11. Where can I refuel?
There are now over 1600 LPG refuelling stations in the UK, including over 270 in the South-East alone. To download a list of locations please use our fuel stations link
12. Will I have to have my LPG system serviced?
Yes, it is crucial that your LPG system is serviced annually or every 12000 miles. We can service a variety of systems including, Tartarini, Prinz, AG and our recommended modular common rail sequential injection system BRC.
Arrangements can be made to have your LPG service carried out at the same time as your petrol service. Please ask for details.
13. Will I get a warranty?
All systems fitted by LPG Conversions Limited are provided with a full parts and labour warranty. Please ask for details
14. Do I have to inform my insurance company?
Yes, but major insurance companies will not increase your premiums providing that the work has been carried out correctly by an LPGA authorised fitter
15. Will I be exempt from Congestion Charges?
Not all LPG conversions qualify for Congestion Charge exemption. To qualify the vehicle has to reach band 4, 40% improvement on Euro IV emission targets. Your engineer will be happy to discuss this with you
16. Will there be a reduction in my road fund licence charge?
When you have your vehicle converted to run on LPG, you must inform the DVLC. They will tell you whether you qualify for a reduction.
17. Can I convert my diesel car?
In theory, yes. In practice, it requires a lot more adaptation, and hence usually costs so much that it is not financially viable. Most customers wishing to convert from diesel to gas change their car first.
18. Why not remove my petrol tank and replace it with a gas tank?
We can sometimes do this, but tend not to for two reasons: Firstly, few customers are completely sure that they will never run out of LPG. Secondly, car petrol tanks are all sorts of shapes and sizes, and hence finding a suitably sized and shaped tank is very difficult.
19. Won't the government just increase the duty on LPG as soon as it becomes popular?
The duty on LPG has in fact been lowered in the 1996, 7, 8 & 9 budgets. The government has stated that it will not consider raising duty on LPG until the November 2001 budget. Also, since LPG is essentially a by-product of other fossil fuel extraction and there is a substantial surplus, there is little inducement for the oil producers to increase their prices.
20. Will my insurance premium increase if I convert my car to run on LPG?
Almost certainly not. To start with, your car still has an engine capable of running on petrol, and as such retains the same insurance classification. Longer term, it is highly likely that insurance companies will start to offer reduced premiums to LPG users, who are generally environmentally responsible and economically intelligent road users...
21. Will my existing garage still be able to service my car?
Yes. As far as they are concerned, little has changed with most of the car. Normal servicing will be basically the same, and certainly well within the ability of a competent mechanic. The installed LPG components require very little maintenance, but it would be sensible to have them quickly checked over from time to time by a LPG qualified mechanic. Since many LPG filling stations are near to an LPG installer, this shouldn't present any difficulty.
22. Is it possible to re-use LPG auto components?
About 80% of the installed equipment can be re-used upon removal, most importantly the tank and the computer controller. If you wish to move equipment from one car to another, then your GasCarCo authorised garage will be happy to help.
23. What about the re-sale value of my car?
At the moment, demand for cars with LPG equipment in is high. Because purchasers can see a professional & economical installation then the conversion is one less thing for them to worry about. The only problem might arise with potential purchasers who do not yet appreciate the advantages of LPG powered driving. You could either educate them or use your local LPG contacts to find a better informed buyer. In the medium term, AAG are also designing a specialist online garage for users to quickly and easily buy and sell LPG vehicles.
24. How safe is an LPG conversion?
Very safe. The tanks used by GasCarCo installers are built to withstand decelerations up to 30G (30 times the force of gravity) in the event of an impact. The system is fully protected with directional and volume flow valves, and the tanks are fitted with industry standard pressure relief valves. However, for a top quality safe installation, not only must the equipment be of the highest quality, but the actual installation must be done correctly. This is why every GasCarCo installer is not only highly trained, but every installation is rigorously re-checked by a supervisor. In short, the LPG systems installed by GasCarCo are safer than the existing petrol ones...
